Distractions
« on: July 10, 2015, 05:16:09 pm »
Since we now have a goals thread, lets also have a distractions thread. What do you do when you know you should be working on your goals? I think we all have specific places we go when we're looking to procrastinate. What's been yours recently?

I'll admit, after trying to resist, I took up watching a kdrama this week. I haven't watched asian dramas in quite some time because they tend to be really absorbing. When I'm procrastinating and wanting drama I usually, no joke, youtube General Hospital. I've watched so much GH in crazy bursts over the years it's ridiculous. I not so secretly wish I could be a script writer for soap operas.

Oh man, I don't even know where to start with this. My distractions are cyclical, though are broken up between random ideas for something to write.

Video games are probably the biggest one. Just a glance over in the video game thread can pretty much spell out how much time (read: far too much) I spend with them. Videos like this just make me want to play more.

Then when I beat a game or have nothing left to play, I usually spend a couple of hours scouring the internet for an interesting anime to watch then proceed to binge it all in as few sittings as possible. If it's a weekend, I'll probably go through 20-30 episodes.

Then because my new fixation has run out of episodes, I'll turn to fan-fiction in the desperate hope someone wrote something both worth reading and matches whatever ridiculous headcanons I have for that universe. If not, I'll placate myself with finding fan art or something similar. Once I've exhausted all those options, I'll cry myself to sleep.

Then the next morning, I'll search for a new game to play. It's the Circle of Life. I'm currently in the video game stage again (playing Dragon Age again, someone help me) but I'm managing to write more too, so at least I have that going for me.

What don't I do is more the question...

  • Netflix Doctor Who. Get DVDs of Old Who from the library.
  • Play video games. Skyrim, Dragon's Dogma, Fallout, Resident Evil, and my friend just bought me Dead Island so, I have that to do.
  • Write anything except what I'm supposed to be writing... (What I'm supposed to be writing: RPs, Death short stories, Supernatural Encyclopedia, 365, Trilogy Edits).
  • Read (Currently: Vampire Hunter D, Hogfather, and that Roman book who's title eludes me and it isn't facing me)
  • Nap
I suppose I should put what I'm supposed to be doing in the goals section...but I have a lot of those.

i read a shit ton of manga, like literally a ton of it. it's a huge problem, and i need to stop but i just love them soooooo much ughhhhh. surprisingly, i don't watch a lot of anime, although i've been meaning to watch a few.

i'm also a netflix binger, but i think we're all a bit guilty of that. you just find that one show and then you're like OMG I NEED TO WATCH ALL OF IT. or watch it repeatedly, i've seen most of bob's burgers at least like 3 or 4 times.

As a boy of my age, having known a time before internet, and even mass distrubuted videogame consoles (yes, they predate the i-net) porn is still a novelty to me. So that's a distraction.

Other than that I windowshop a lot online. Usually leather jackets, but lately it's been cheap motorbikes and boots, too.

I go to the gym on every work day, which is five days a week. Gets me resullts but I'd rather have the resullts without the time spent, even if I do like the people at my gym.

Distractions wishlist, though:

Videogames
Binge anime/manga like lyte
Boardgames

Is it odd tht I now aspire to neardy things, because that's all I want to do these days, but don't have the time.

I also love on Ara, but that is not a distraction, that's my purpose.

I'm with Verse on the window shopping online. For me it's mostly witty t-shirts, video games I've missed during my last 5 years in technological exile, photo gear, and LARP weapons.

I found a game on plarium.net calld nord, which is sort of a comical turn based rpg, meets rts set in a Viking world. I've been trying to ween myself from it, because at my age I do know better.

Additionally I waste time in the ooc sections of rpgc. I have little desire left to game there anymore, but I can't resist the bullshit forums.

Otherwise I am out shooting, which is a good thing, but sometimes I will go out and shoot when I should be studying.

Ah procrastination... my friend.

- Occasionally come hear and read threads. Old and new. Some I have no part in. I like to re-read old posts.
- Watch far too many tv series. Currently hooked on Orphan Black
- Make cups/pots of tea.
- Lush. It's an addiction which far exceeds the 'pay grade' of a student nurse.
- Read. Currently Wyrd Sisters and Wicked. (When I should be reading about nurse stuff)
- Give bad advice and 'gossip' with associates/friends.
- Write in order to appease the muses. They love getting carried away at work otherwise.
- Ask ridiculous questions of my other half. Debate topics.
-  Make cards for occasions such as birthdays etc.
- Ebay. Currently taking a break from being a seller, but it's a massive addiction. And when they get sent, I wrap them in bubble wrap and gift wrap before they go in their envelopes. I see it as practice for Christmas.

Ugh. I binge watched a kdrama this last weekend. Like 20 episodes in four days. Hoping it'll stave off the procrastination urge for a while. It's been years since I gave in to the asian drama watching!

Waiting to hear back on queries is starting to mess with my head and I'm feeling more and more drawn to shows and fanfics. MUST RESIST!

Actually fanfics can be therapeutic, and profitable.

Think of things like Wizards of the Coast books, or starwars, expanded universe, etc.

What are they, after all but essentially fanfics?

I watch the home improvement channel and the cooking channel.  Sometimes I'll watch all 5 taped episodes of Love it or List it...don't know why....

I lurk.  I tend to meander around the computer and read stuff like old threads or general chat I'm not involved in.

I play some games on the I-pad.  Mostly building cities and breeding dragons.  My son tried to get me to play Destiny on the Xbox360, but I couldn't work the controller right.  After being laughed at for shooting the floor enough times I gave up.

I also have two kids.  They are not really distractions but keeping up with them is time consuming so bed tends to lure me away in the end because I'm just too tired to....lurk or watch tv.

Lol I heard that. My daughter is 9. Half the time she's turning into miss "get outta my face old, man, you're too weird, for m'style"; the rest of the time She's all Dad, how does this work, and what's that do?

My dad told me as time goes on the former 'tude will be the dominant, until she moves out and realizes her old man ain't half as dumb as she thought he was.

I've been going retro, watching various music vids, from the 80"s (my era) I have come to a couple of conclusions:

1. The music rocked, but 90% of the videos really sucked. Now occasionally you had one that was trying to tell a story, and that was cool, but usually it would be a constant cut scene war of band in studio/close up of singer/band on their way to car, coming out of restaurant, going into rest room, etc.

2. I have to wonder (and may Punk Rock forgive me) if Billy Idol was really as hard core as his look and his press. I used to think so, but now that I am older, and have less tolerance for bullshit than I used to, I'm starting to suspect he might have been a real poser, off camera/out of studio.
I hope I'm wrong. I hope he was every bit the hard ass, his image had him portray, but I have this creeping, doubting suspicion.

i've only ever seen boys before flowers, and the music repetition got to me so bad i started to have nightmares about songs i don't even understand. every time that girl got hugged by a dude or something dramatic happened THE MUSIC JUST HAD TO PLAY. so yeah, i'm kind of thankful that killed a possible huge distraction for me.

an actual distraction for me though is making avatars, mainly for myself, not even for my drops. i need to stop but every week i'm like, you know what, i need a new avatar. it's a problem, and i'm probably not going to stop.

Yeah, the music thing is not exclusively a Boys Over Flowers thing. I had trouble watching Boys Over Flowers though since it was the third remake of the same manga. First Taiwan did it (one of the first dramas I ever saw) and then Japan did it and then finally Korea did it. So, I think it was reasonable that I had trouble getting into that plot AGAIN. But the music thing happens in all of them, no matter the country. The show has a song, or two, that get played all the time. Theme song style. I, personally, loooooove it.

On a related note, I've realized that I am 100x more productive and happy during the day if, when I get home from the gym, I turn on music instead of the tv.

you could probably throw a banana at me and i'd be distracted. like a monkey.

everything distracts me. everything.  when i am not distracted, i will go looking for distractions.  my favourite is talking, but yes, i'll also do the window-shopping thing.  that can keep me entertained for hours.

my other favourite distraction is my ipod/playing with itunes.

I recently discovered that Amazon is my most favorite place in all the world. I noticed that gift card values are accumulative. I noticed this last week when Mrs. Struck gave me 50 dollar gift card for our anniversary, and I redeemed it, to find that it was added to the balance of a previous card on my account.

Incidentally I used the card to buy her a solar power bank, with usb, and micro usb ports so she can recharge her phone, and kindle fire tablet on the go.

I also discovered that gift cards are the best way to shop. No link to my house account where my paycheck goes every two weeks, and if the card gets hacked, the worst thing that can happen is I'm out a few bucks.

So yes, Amazon is my new favorite distraction. See also, that thing I do to avoid the other things I know I should be doing, but am too afraid to do them.

Ara please, you're missing the bigger picture here. All of that was just an elaborate ploy to get you to watch Gravity Falls so you can change your avatar to Wendy, convince Verse to change his to Soos, and then we can all go solve mysteries together.

(but really it's so we can start a resistance against Krystal's legion, shh don't tell her, we still have the element of surprise)

Ya'll don't think I see every post on this site? Do you know how many days I've spent on this website? :P

Good luck though ^-^ I need a good rebellion as a distraction. Civ 5 isn't entertaining enough. Bring it, Pride.

RAINS OF CASTAMERE

 :krys: :lion: :tinylion:

I distract myself by looking up new versions of the Rains of Castamere. I'm currently discussing a Cersei Cosplay and a "Lady Reyne" cosplay.

so i'm back in school again which means distractions are popping up like crazy.

i've realized that my cat is a huge distraction. if i have to choose between messing with the cat or reading my textbooks, i choose the cat pretty much every time.

oh and i need to stop napping because it's really just sleeping at weird hours of the day without getting ANYTHING done. it's so bad but i love it soooo much.

I know that's right. I can't resist a good nap on a day off, but I wish I could, because napping takes valuable, very finite down time away from other, more productive things I could be doing.

I should be reading my textbooks, too, but I can't resist going onto amazon, for good free kindle books. How many do I even have now? Do I even know?  I nabbed 9 more today, all of which I started reading to justify having gotten them. But how many will I finish?  That one I cannot answer.

I can't nap. I always think I can, and don't get me wrong, I can fall asleep whenever. It's just that I don't like sleeping for short periods of time.

I think Jill has become one of my favorite distractions. That girl is funny!

I've run out of episodes of Gravity Falls and seem to be on to Star vs. The forces of evil. It's kind of a poor man's Gravity Falls. I feel like there should be a crossover episode where Star is responsible for some mysterious activity in Gravity Falls.

I don't even know what gravity falls is, apart from erroneous. Gravity does not fall, it keeps us, and our entire planet from floating into several orders of magnitude level chaos.

Yeah I'm probably out of touch. To paraphrase a line from a song that's popular on the airwaves, lately "Well that's fine by me."

I don't actually sleep anymore. Even my normal sleep cycle is a glorified nap.

I like the way Paul Simon put it: "I don't expect to sleep through the night."

I hate sleeping. Sleep takes time away from being awake.

And I love sleep! I have some of my best ideas in that inbetween place when waking. Or just awesome dreams where I'm a zombie or somesuch greatness.
