Random Challenge/Game?
« on: January 13, 2015, 08:16:28 pm »
So, today... to teach us about plagiarism: the tutor got us all to think of a song we knew well and that wasn't too obscure and to paraphrase it.
I'm not too certain I was doing it right, and I thought about how you guys love a challenge.
So maybe you can teach me as we go.

So... here was my first attempt:

"No one one can be as beautiful as you
With your long red locks,
Your very pale skin and sparkling green eyes.
I cannot fight with you..."

Guess the song and take a go. :)
And let me know if I did do it right, someone... please?

Could your song, perhaps be Jolene?

I'm not sure if you did what she wanted, and I Googled to see if it matched, so if it isn't Jolene... wow!

If she wanted it to be more paraphrased, not like a poem or song lyrics, I'd think it would be something more along the lines of descriptive interpretation.

Maybe something like:

I look at you and all I can think about is where I lack. The flame of your hair, the flash of your green eyes, the perfect blush on your pale cheeks as you smile at him, all more tantalizing than my plain Jane looks. I can see why he would want you instead of me.

If it is just to paraphrase the actual lyrics than be descriptive, then I think you did a really great job. Again, all of this hinging on if I got the song right in the first place. =]

It was Jolene. Well done Pere.

I think both examples; the one I provided and the one you provided are correct, but for the exercise; It was literally to paraphrase the song lyrics.

Another example given by someone else was

Intercourse grenade, intercourse grenade = Sex bomb, Sex bomb

or

Some one else masticates the dirt particles = Another one bites the dust.

Some came out very obscure, others were ok.

But I now can't stop my brain from twisting song lyrics.

Thank you for your help Pere, I will bear what you said in mind next time I write an essay.

Do you want to give paraphrasing a song a go?

i'm pretty sure your tutor got the idea from this. there's a whole bunch of songs paraphrased there btw, it's pretty fun to guess them~

i do think your tutor applied an interesting idea to it though. i always hated paraphrasing, but i think the best way to go about it is to read what you're paraphrasing and then write out the idea you get from it. it's usually shorter and you get the point across better.

I was thinking about songs and these are more titles/lines than full choruses or verses but the ones that popped into my head right before I fell asleep last night were:

My current status is metallic homo sapien.

~

You need nothing but affection

~

I've returned in the darkest of colors.

I believe
1) I am Iron Man
2) All you need is love
3) Back to black.

Lightning: I've never understood paraphrasing till we did this exercise in class. Can''t believe they found a 'fun' way to teach degree students something that will help with their essays.

Right on all fronts, though I think the song is Back in black, but certainly close enough. =] :rainbowsheep:

Haha, looks like we have a Miley Cyrus fan over here. Wrecking Ball, yeah?

And here's what I'm guessing will be a pretty obvious one:

I put forth a great deal of effort / and achieved a laudable amount / but in conclusion / there was no point in it at all.

In The End by Linkin Park, mayhap?

Try this one!

I believe that I am someone who is unusual and bound by a collar and chain / I believe that I have no means of release
